Interactive digital work: found objects, digital sculpture, digital drawing stop-frame animation

Dimensions variable

The collaborative and playful work with commercial animator Phillip van der Walt is a visual exploration of the fluidity of histories and imaginaries intimated by objects of design and craft. An ashtray with a crest of Verwoerd Dam - now known as Gariep Dam - bought at a pawn shop was used as a touchstone: the ordinary, everyday mass-produced steel-cast object is also, at the same time, a placeholder for an imaginary time and place. The picturesque crest-plaque that ‘animates’ the typical design-object with identity, history and politics is explored in this work. The viewer is invited to engage with these tensions and concerns by way of navigating the mouse, whereby the viewer can turn, move, and play with the digital animation on the screen.
